PCC pledges funding for sports clubs with community safety goal

Leicestershire Police and Crime Commissioner Lord Willy Bach has announced details of a one-off sports funding programme to support projects which deliver crime prevention through activity.

The PCC decided that the next tranche of funding awards from his Prevention Fund will be invested in sports-based community schemes which help divert youngsters away from crime and equip them with confidence and self-esteem.

The Prevention Fund has been set up to help voluntary and third sector groups support the Commissioner’s public safety aspirations in his Police and Crime Plan and confront pressing community issues.

Grants of up to £25,000 are available in 2017-18 for organisations whose projects successfully address the PCC’s crime priority areas which include hate crime, domestic violence and abuse, Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE), drug and alcohol-related problems, sexual violence and mental health.

The initial funding round attracted numerous applications from sports clubs and activity-based community groups, prompting the PCC to hold a special “sports only” application round.

He said: “I’m all for projects which encourage young people to use their time productively and effectively and help develop them into successful and motivated adults.

“Sport helps to instil confidence and self-worth and inspires young people to fulfil their potential. We also cannot underestimate the impact of positive role models on their future success at school, college and socially.

“Through my grants programme I want to help young people channel their energy and enthusiasm into something positive and divert them away from crime. Sport is a fantastic way to do this and ultimately increases the safety of our communities.”

Sports-themed applications will be received from now until October 31. Other non-sporting themed applications will also be considered during this time.

Grants of up to £9,999pa are currently available with the possibility of up to £25,000 for exceptional projects.
