Rupert Matthews, PCC for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, has welcomed the publication of the National Police Chiefs’ Council and College of Policing ‘Policing Violence against Women and Girls National Framework for Delivery’.
He said: “It’s vital that women and girls can live their lives without fear of harm. They should feel safe and be safe. That is their absolute right. This framework will set a way forward to achieving that.
“It’s clear that, right now, many are fearful in certain situations and locations. I’m pleased that the funding my office secured from the Safer Streets fund is going some way to improving districts where consultation has shown women to feel at risk. We have improved street lighting, installed new CCTV cameras and more besides. But there is more to do.
“This framework will help forces to follow proven best practice in their bid to protect women and girls. I will follow progress closely, while investing in other projects designed to rehabilitate repeat offenders and provide greater security in higher risk situations.
“It is simply not right, in this day and age, that women can feel at risk simply by walking home or going about their daily business. It is our responsibility, as a society, to do everything we can to address that. For my part, I will consider where I can invest funding and resources to make the greatest difference.”
