Road safety tops the agenda in PCC's community visit to Market Harborough

Commissioner on Main Street Broughton Astley

Main Street, Broughton Astley

Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Police and Crime Commissioner Rupert Matthews highlighted local concerns about speeding during a community visit to Market Harborough.

The PCC met up with Inspector Liz Perry, the local Neighbourhood Policing Commander for the area, where he shared residents’ concerns about speeding in Main Road and Station Road in Broughton Astley. He was told these areas had been subjected to traffic surveys and new mobile speed camera sites had been identified to address the issues.

Similar concerns were raised about the A4304 in Husbands Bosworth and along the B581 near Dunton Bassett and the Commissioner was reassured that proactive mobile speed camera deployment was taking place in both areas and fines issued when appropriate.

The PCC also heard about the recent launch of a Speedwatch group in Kibworth to monitor speeding in the area. The results of this initial wave of monitoring are being reviewed by the Road Safety Partnership with consideration given to the possibility of other schemes launching within the area.

Following his visit, Mr Matthews said: “It was a very productive visit, and I was reassured that speeding features highly on the neighbourhood policing team’s priorities. Officers are already taking proactive action to address the concerns of residents however I will follow this up and discuss what else we can do to step up enforcement in the way local people want.

“Speeding not only poses a danger to life it also spoils people’s enjoyment of their neighbourhoods and homes. Residents are rightly fed up and I am determined to root out other solutions with our partners to tackle these problems head-on.”
