PCC invests £40k in crime prevention activities to make communities stronger and more resilient

More than £40k of funding has been shared across three communities to help volunteers reduce the risk of crime and anti-social behaviour.

Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Police and Crime Commissioner Rupert Matthews has announced the outcome of his recent funding round which has seen eight organisations based within his People Zones benefit from new grants.

People Zones are designated geographic areas where the PCC is working together with residents and partners including Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) organisations to tackle inequalities, build on the strengths of the community, promote inclusion and connectivity and empower people to play an active role in making their area safer.

There are currently three People Zones across the force area: Bell Foundry, New Parks and Thringstone & Whitwick.

The funding comes on top of the £57k he invested across the three People Zones earlier this summer.

Mr Matthews said: “I am really pleased to support more projects across our three People Zones and build on the work already underway to improve people’s lives.

“This round includes initiatives to improve our green spaces, develop young people’s skills and confidence, provide mentorship opportunities to divert people from crime and ASB, support for women recovering from trauma and abuse, new life-saving defibrillators, and the provision of specialist equipment for people with disabilities.

“I know how important it is people feel safe in the community where they live. One of the ways I believe People Zones can achieve this is by helping people to become more resilient and creating a strong support network around them to help them manage their lives and any challenges they may face effectively.

“Our approach empowers everyone to play their part. We are proud to be working with volunteers and local community groups and organisations that support our efforts to improve health and wellbeing, reduce isolation and increase access to education and services while restoring a sense of pride within the community and improving quality of life.

“There will be further opportunities to apply for funding in the future. I look forward to visiting the projects which have successfully received funding to see the results of their work.”
