PCC Welcomes Head Start for Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee

Police and Crime Commissioner Rupert Matthews has welcomed confirmation that Leicestershire Police is ahead of the game in the roll out of the Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee.

The Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee is part of an ambitious mission by the Government to revitalise Neighbourhood Policing across England and Wales, putting an extra 13,000 police officers into communities by 2029 – including an extra 35 in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland over the next 12 months.

At the heart of the scheme is a pledge to provide a named, contactable officer for every neighbourhood, responsive to local problems, and for residents and businesses to be able to have their say on policing priorities for their area.

Police forces have until June 30th to make necessary changes to ensure they meet the new standards and are working with the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) on implementation.

In a recent letter to the force, the NPCC confirmed Leicestershire Police already provides ‘Your Area’ information for neighbourhood policing on its website and that its core offering on the service complies with the statutory requirements of the Named, Contactable Officer Pledge (NCOP).

Welcoming the appraisal, Mr Matthews said: “Since I was elected I have been clear about the importance of strong, visible and accessible local policing in our city and two counties.  This ensures that officers know and understand their communities and are invested in nurturing positive relationships with the people they serve. This work has already put us ahead in terms of meeting the requirements of the Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee and will continue to support our work to prevent crime hand in hand with our communities.

“As a force, Leicestershire Police works tirelessly with its many partners to address the issues that matter most to residents and businesses. While I am reassured that Leicestershire Police already optimises its online presence to promote connectivity within our communities, we are committed to doing even more and identifying further opportunities to provide a better service to residents and businesses.”

The Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee requires police forces to provide a named police constable or Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) for each neighbourhood in England and Wales on their websites. Additionally, forces must ensure the public can contact their neighbourhood team online and that they can response to any neighbourhood contact within three days.
