Safer Streets - Round 2

The PCC, Rupert Matthews, has secured extra funding worth £432k to make the county’s streets safer and increase the protection of people and property.

Following a successful bid to the Home Office’s Safer Streets Fund, the PCC will spearhead a major safety project to prevent theft, burglary and robbery in Castle Donnington, Hinckley, Lutterworth and Melton Mowbray.

Match funding has also been secured from the Local Authorities in which the areas lie and therefore the following areas have been awarded:

  • Castle Donington - £108,000 plus £47,060 match funding
  • Hinckley - £108,000 plus £30,735 match funding
  • Lutterworth - £108,000 plus £34,312 match funding
  • Melton Mowbray - £108,000 plus £32,296 match funding


Castle Donington

The overall approach for the area is to take a strong community approach to ensure that the community are fully on board and are aware of the target hardening available to all households via 24/7 Locks who will undertake a property/vulnerability assessment and fit appropriate items.  The purchase, installation and the maintenance of dedicated CCTV poles and cameras in the town centre as well as maximising the use of existing mobile cameras as well as the installation and maintenance costs for ANPR cameras at key locations.

Hinckley

The overall approach for the area is to take a strong community approach to ensure that the community are fully on board and are aware of the target hardening available to all households via 24/7 Locks who will undertake a property/vulnerability assessment and fit appropriate items.  Purchase of walkie talkies to expand the town centre radio link scheme and identifying graffiti hotspots and the removal of this graffiti to help to deter those who might congregate there and from there undertake acquisitive crime.  The purchase, installation and maintenance of CCTV cameras in identified hot spot locations which will benefit from the cameras as well as the installation and maintenance costs for ANPR cameras at key locations.

Lutterworth

The overall approach for the area is to take a strong community approach to ensure that the community are fully on board and are aware of the target hardening available to all households via 24/7 Locks who will undertake a property/vulnerability assessment and fit appropriate items.  There will be a focus on car crime/theft target hardening in the area as well as the purchase, installation and maintenance of CCTV cameras in identified hot spot locations which will benefit from the cameras.  Also, the installation and maintenance costs for ANPR cameras placed at key locations.

Melton Mowbray

The overall approach for the area is to take a strong community approach to ensure that the community are fully on board and are aware of the target hardening available to all households via 24/7 Locks who will undertake a property/vulnerability assessment and fit appropriate items.  The installation of lighting to the Rutland Street Blocks in Melton as well as the purchase of walkie talkies to expand the town centre radio link scheme.  The purchase, installation and maintenance of CCTV cameras in identified hot spot locations which will benefit from the cameras as well as the installation and maintenance costs for ANPR cameras placed at key locations.
